A friend of mine just ordered new brushes for the starter of his Ducati 916. He measured the new ones to be 12mm long. The brushes on the DB2 where 9 and 10 mm respectively, so I decided not to change them. Maybe I should have changed them, but I've got a feeling that the brushes wasn't the problem.
Following that decition I reassembled the starter. It’s now overhauled with new ball bearing, repainted housing and new zinc plating on the screws. I tested the starter and it runs fine drawing about 20A at no load. Contact resistance between + terminal and ground is not measurable with my DVM. Hopefully it will work better than before!
